All three types of maps can be generated from any large database of scientific literature that includes citation information.
The disciplinary map shown above was based on data from Thomson’s ISI database and Elsevier’s Scopus database. Combining journal-journal relatedness data allowed us to generate a map that covered over 16,000 journals, and correspondingly filled in the gaps that were in each of these databases.
The competency map shown above is based on Elsevier’s Scopus database (2003 through 2007) and shows the competencies or strengths of several nations.
The paradigm map shown above is based on Elsevier’s Scopus database (limited to publications from 2003-2007).
